55 BCL men sent to jail

A total of 55 leaders and activists of the banned Chhatra League have been sent to jail after being arrested during a procession in Gulistan and Paltan areas of Dhaka. 

On Monday, Dhaka's Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Md. Chanawullah and Metropolitan Magistrate Sharifur Rahman issued separate orders for their detention.

According to sources from the Dhaka Court's prosecution office, 42 Chhatra League members were arrested from Paltan Police Station and 13 from Shahbagh Police Station. They were arrested in connection with separate cases filed under the Anti-Terrorism Act by the Paltan and Shahbagh police.

The arrested individuals were brought to court in the afternoon, where investigation officers requested their detention until the completion of the investigation. The defense filed for bail, while the prosecution opposed the request. After hearing both sides, the magistrate rejected the bail application and ordered them to be sent to jail.

The arrests took place on Sunday afternoon when the individuals were participating in a procession in the Gulistan and Paltan areas. Subsequently, two separate cases under the Anti-Terrorism Act were filed against them in the Paltan and Shahbagh police stations.

The case filed by Paltan police states that around 200 to 300 Chhatra League members gathered at Paltan Mor around 12:30 pm on Sunday, chanting slogans in support of the banned organization, disturbing public order. Forty-two individuals were arrested, while others managed to flee.

The Shahbagh case report mentioned that between 12:50 pm and 1:00 pm on Sunday, 100 to 150 Chhatra League members gathered at Gulistan Zero Point, chanting slogans in support of the banned group, disrupting the state’s sovereignty. Thirteen individuals were arrested.

It is noteworthy that the ruling Awami League had called for a protest rally on Sunday in observance of the Noor Hossain Day.
