Chattogram district administration on Thursday knocked down at least 500 risky makeshift structures from the hills in Akbar Shah area of the port city, following a court order.

The administration in cooperation with the Department of Environment led the drive.

Touhidul Islam, senior assistant commissioner of district administration, said that they dismantled more than 500 illegal structures from hills near Foy's Lake in Beltolighona area.

"A landslide occurred there last March, so we wanted to make sure that people who are exposed to landslides are safe," he added.

"After the eviction, we have erected barbed wire fences and pillars to prevent the encroachment of the hilly land," he said.

The district administration found 835 families living on 17 hills in the port city in a survey in 2019.

The Human Rights and Peace for Bangladesh filed a petition on August 1, 2022 with the High Court in this regard.

The same month, an HC bench ordered removal of illegal structures from the hills in the port city.
