5 to die for killing UP member

A court in Manikganj has sentenced five people, including a women to death penalty and acquitted thirteen others in a case filed over the murder of union parishad member Ashraf Ali in Ghior upazila of Manikganj.

After hearing all the records and witnesses, Additional District and Sessions Judge of Manikganj Shahana Haq Siddiqui delivered the verdict on Tuesday in presence of the convicts.

The condemned convicted were identified as Md Monjur Rahman, Moazzem Hossain, Md Babul Mia, Azizul Haque and Poly Begum, residents of Fulhara village in the upazila.

The acuitted are Gagan Khan, Shaheed Dewan, Raza Mia, Belayet Hossain, Monwara Begum, Rashida Begumn, Rehena Begum, Monwara Begum-2, Renu Begum, Selina Begum, Sayedur Rahman, Arman Ali and Rezia Begum.

According to the prosecution, former UP member Ashraf Ali was attacked by his opponents, on 18 June 2013 at Fulhara village in Ghior upazila over a land dispute. Ashraf Ali died at a Dhaka hospital the day after the incident.

The next day, on 19 June, the victim’s brother Mansur Alam filed a murder case against 25 accused with Ghior police station.

After a long investigation, the investigating officer of the case, SI Hasmat Ali, submit a chargesheet against 18 people on 31 May 2014.

Following the testimony of 14 people in the court, the judge sentenced five accused, including a women to death and acquitted 13 accused persons in the case as the prosecution failed to prove their involvement, state lawyer Afsarul Islam Moni said.
