5 get life in Juba League leader killing case

A trial tribunal in Rajshahi city on Sunday convicted five persons and sentenced them to life in prison on charge of killing Jubo League leader Ismail Hossain in Godagari upazila in Rajshahi district around three years back.

In its verdict, the tribunal also sentenced another person to ten years jail, four persons to six months behind the bar and 15 others to one month jail each.

Divisional Speedy Tribunal Judge Anup Kumar handed down the verdict in a crowded courtroom with the presence of 33 accused of the case on Sunday noon.

Special Public Prosecutor Entajul Haque said Ismail Hossain was performing duties as convener of election operating committee of Bangladesh Awami League at Dewpara Union of Godagari upazila on the day of the Eleventh National Parliamentary Election on December 30, 2018.

BNP-Jamaat workers beat and chopped Ismail indiscriminately when he tried to resist them from capturing the Palpur School polling centre under the same union. Subsequently, he was rushed to Rajshahi Medical College Hospital where he succumbed to his injuries.

Bizla Begum, wife of the deceased leader, had lodged a case with Godagari Police Station.

Upon completion of investigation police pressed charges accusing 35 people.

The tribunal examined recorded depositions of 22 prosecution witnesses and other relevant evidence and pronounced the aforesaid verdict.
