A Shariatpur court on Wednesday sentenced five people to life imprisonment in a case filed over the killing of a couple in Bhedarganj upazila in the district in 2012.
District and Sessions Judge Prashanto Kumar Biswas handed down the verdict. The convicts were not present while verdict pronounced.
The convicts are Roman Goldar, 32, Sumon Goldar, 30, Momtaz Begum, 58, Sahidullah Sahid, 32, and Belayet Hossain,30 of Kaichkuri village under Bhedarganj upazila of the district. All of them were tried in absentia.
According to the prosecution, the convicts stormed the house of Abdul Hakim Mridha at the village on the night of June 22, 2012 and strangulated him and his wife Hazera Begum to death after tying them up. Victims’ son Md Abu Alam Mridha filed a case in this connection.
