Five universities from Bangladesh have been listed among the world’s top institutions for the 2024-25 academic year, as per the latest rankings by US News and World Report, a well-known American media company.

The universities include Dhaka University (DU), Rajshahi University (RU), Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (Buet), Jahangirnagar University, and Bangladesh Agricultural University.

Among them, Dhaka University is ranked the highest, standing at 560th globally and 146th in Asia. Rajshahi University is ranked 1,076th globally and 342nd in Asia. Buet is placed at 1,396th globally and 488th in Asia. Jahangirnagar University ranks 1,414th globally and 500th in Asia. Bangladesh Agricultural University is ranked 1,775th globally and 689th in Asia.

These rankings were published on June 24 and updated on June 25 on the US News website. This year’s rankings feature 2,250 universities from over 100 countries, which is more than the 2,000 institutions from 90 countries listed last year.

The rankings are based on 13 factors, such as global and regional research reputation, publications, books, conferences, and the impact of research citations. These factors help to determine the universities' positions on the global list.

Last year, only two Bangladeshi universities made it to the list: Dhaka University ranked 977th globally and 263rd in Asia, while Buet was included but not ranked.

This year, Harvard University is ranked first globally, followed by the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), Stanford University, the University of Oxford, and the University of California, Berkeley.

In Asia, China has the most universities listed with 422, followed by India with 140, and Pakistan with 32.
