5,000 metres of fishing nets seized from Halda

A total of 5,000 metres of fishing nets and various fishing equipment used for setting up nets were seized on Wednesday after conducting separate drives in the Halda River, the only natural fish breeding ground in Asia.

The drives were conducted from Noyahat area in Gorduara Union in to Nangolmor area in Chattogram on early Wednesday. Raozan Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) Aonggyahai Marma led the drives with the assistance of speedboats of Integrated Development Foundation (IDF) and Palli-Karma Sahayak Foundation (PKSF). Upazila Project Implementation Officer Mohammad Niaz Morshed was also present at that time.

A total of 5,000 meters of nets and various equipment used for setting up nets were seized during the operation.

Later, the seized illegal nets were burned at the IDF Halda Research and Training Center in the presence of Raozan Upazila Nirbahi Officer Aonggyahai Marma, Halda Project Director Muhammad Mizanur Rahman, and Senior Upazila Fisheries Officer Md Alamgir Hossain.

Senior Upazila Fisheries Officer Md Alamgir Hossain stated that such operations will be conducted regularly to detain illegal fishers and seize illegal nets.

Drives were conducted a total of seven times at various points of Halda River from August 26 to October 15. A total of 9,000 metres of fishing nets were seized during the drives, led by Upazila Nirbahi Officer and Senior Upazila Fisheries Officer.
