46,500 pregnant women at health risk in Kishoreganj for virus crisis

Pregnant women need regular medical check-ups to reduce their health risks while giving birth. In addition, if complications occur during and after childbirth, she has to be admitted to the hospital. But due to the corona crisis, there have been complications in providing necessary health care to pregnant women in Kishoreganj. 

At present there are 46,500 women are pregnant in the whole district.  Regular medical check-ups of these women have almost stopped for the fear of corona virus infection.

Health officials say field workers of the family planning department are regularly checking the health condition of these pregnant women.  In case of any physical illness, the doctors of the mother and child welfare centre will provide necessary services to them.  Precautionary steps have been taken for this already.

According to the Kishoreganj office of the Department of Health and Family Planning, a pregnant woman has to undergo check-up at least four times during her pregnancy.  But at present no one wants to come to the health centre for check-ups due to the risk of corona 

The field workers of the department are providing services to the pregnant women in special needs. There are 49 field medical assistants, 97 field workers, 421 family welfare assistants and 4 pharmacists working currently to provide healthcare services to these women.

Acting Deputy Director of the Health and Family planning Department Arvind Dutt said, “Pregnant women are now at health risk. Therefore, we advise these women to be careful not to come out of the house at this time under any circumstances”.

He added, their field workers are ready to provide services to the expecting mothers going to their houses. The phone numbers of the field workers have been circulated. It is advisable to go to the local hospital in case of any physical problem. However, field workers are also working at risk, he said.

Kishoreganj Mother and Child Welfare Centre’s Chief Health Officer Dr. Hosna Begum said that, the hospital has been kept open for 24 hours to provide services to pregnant women. The outdoor section is open from 8 am to 12 in the noon. 

She said, pregnant women usually come to the hospital to get services like, how is the blood circulation and heartbeat of the mother and her unborn baby or when will the delivery take place. But, now they are not coming for services due to corona virus spread.  However, the doctors of the hospital are ready to provide them with any healthcare services.
