5th day of EC hearing

44 more aspirants regain candidacy

On the fifth day of hearing appeals on decisions regarding nominations for the upcoming 12th Jatiya Sangsad (JS) election slated for January 7, 2024, the Election Commission on Thursday restored candidacy of 44 more aspirants while rejected appeals of 52 other candidates. 

With those 44 candidates, so far 260 aspirants got their candidacies back in five days of hearing from December 11. 

On Thursday, the EC held hearing on appeals of 101 candidates and of 44 of them were declared as valid candidates while 52 appeals were rejected. Besides, one of the aspirants remained absent in the hearing and four other appeals remained withheld.

The EC officials said there are 161 more appeals remaining for hearing on today (Friday), the last day of six-day hearing period.

According to the EC, 56 aspirants regained their candidacies on the first day of hearing on December 10 while 51 aspirants on December 11. On the third day of hearing, 61 aspirants got back their candidatures and 48 others regained candidacies on the fourth day of hearing

on December 13. The EC announced the JS polls schedule on November 15. The last date for submission of nomination papers was November 30. A total of 2,716 candidates submitted their nomination forms from at least 30 registered political parties and individuals. After the primary scrutiny, the Returning Officers declared 1,985 candidates valid and 731 as invalid.

Later, 561 out of 731 invalid candidates appealed before the EC from December 5 to December 9.

The last date for the withdrawal of candidacy is on December. Electoral symbols will be distributed among the parties and candidates on December 18.
