4 to die for killing easy-bike driver in Sarishabari

Four people were sentenced to death on Sunday for killing easy-bike driver Laiju Miah after stealing his vehicle in Sarishabari upazila of Jamalpur district around eight years ago.

Those who will walk to the gallows are Moni Taher, Rubel Mia, Zakir Hossain and Sohag, residents of Sarishabari upazila. Of the convicts, Sohag and Zakir Hossain are absconding.

Additional District and Sessions Judge-2 Court Judge Md Anwar Sadat announced the verdict on Sunday afternoon and fined the convicts Tk 50,000 each. 

Auto driver Laiju Miah is the son of Amjad Hossain of Bagarpar village under Pogaldigha Union in Sarishabari upazila.

According to the case, on September 30, 2016, Laiju Mia left home with an auto-rickshaw and never returned. The next day, local people saw Laiju's body lying near Jhalupara Bridge in the municipal area and informed the police of it. Later, the police recovered the body of Laiju from Jhalupara Bridge around 8:00am.

Shafiqul Islam Akkas, additional lawyer for the state, said Laiju's father filed a murder case with Sarishabari Police Station after the killing of his son.  Police arrested Rubel Mia and Moni Taher on suspicion. Later, the accused gave a confessional statement under section 164 and narrated the incident. The court announced the verdict on Sunday after taking the testimony of 17 witnesses in the case. This judgment was given in the presence of two persons who were sentenced to death. 

The remaining two went into hiding after being released on bail.
