4 JMB members including northern region head arrested

Police arrested four members of the banned militant outfit Jammatul Mujaheedin Bangladesh (JMB) including its northern region head during a drive in early hours on Sunday.

The arrestees were identified as JMB’s northern region chief Ataur Rahman alias Arafat, 34, Mizanur Rahman alias Nahid, 42, Johurul Islam alias Siddique, 27, and Mizanur Rahman, 24.

Police Super of the district Ali Ashraf Bhuiyan confirmed the matter at a press briefing on Sunday morning.

He said, “The police headquarters and the Detective Branch (DB) of Bogura district jointly conducted the drive and arrested them from Pakurtala Bus stand area of Shibganj upazila in the district at around 1am on Sunday.

During the drive, police recovered a pistol, three bullets, two machetes, knives, explosives and huge grenade bodies and circuits from their possessions, said the official.

Police arrested them while holding a secret meeting.

After joining to the militant group in 2013, the police super said JBM’s northern region chief Ataur Rahman, son of Abdul Karim of Betubari village under Kawnia upazila of Rangpur district, became Rangpur and Rajshahi division head from 2018.

Ataur became northern region head after Toukir of Tangail who was assassinated by the law enforcers in cross-fire.

A case was filed in this connection.
