RAB-7 has arrested five pirates, including the chief of Kamal Bahini, who kidnapped fishermen on the Chittagong-Hatiya channel and demanded ransom. At the same time 4 fishermen were abducted and a large quantity of firearms and a trawler were recovered.
They were arrested in a raid from last Friday night to Tuesday night. The information was given by RAB-7 a press conference at RAB's Chandgaon camp on Wednesday morning.
The five arrested are Md. Kamal (35) of NoakhaliSubarnachar, Md. NurNabi (26), Md. Shamim (24) of Laxmipur, Md. Annie (31), Md. FerdousMajhi (35). Md. Among them. RAB has claimed that Kamal is the main coordinator of the pirates.
It was informed in the press conference that RAB members raided the second floor of a building on Akmal Ali Road of EPZ Police Station in Chittagong on February 11 on the basis of intelligence information. The RAB arrested them on the night of February 15 after conducting a 72-hour siege operation. During this time RAB seized from them a single barrel gun, 2 one shooter guns, 3 ramdas, 3 chapatis, 1 sharp knife and razor. Also 4 abducted fishermen were rescued.
RAB-7 Senior Assistant Director Md. NurulAbshar said Md. Kamal was the leader of the group among the arrested pirates. This is why he planned all the misdeeds of their forces and kidnapped and extorted money from the relatives of the victims through development and cash. There are more than two cases against Kamal, including arms and robbery. The arrested pirate Md. NurNabi used to exchange information and provide food to the robbers and their boats. There are 3 more cases against him including arms and robbery in different police stations. Arrested Md. Shamim, Md. Annie tortured the abducted fishermen to demand ransom. The latest arrested pirate Md. Ferdous used to help the victims (fishermen) to hide in different places on the sea shore by boat. There are several robbery cases against them in different police stations.
He said the five accused arrested four fishermen along with a trawler carrying illegal firearms and home-made weapons at around 12pm on February 10 while fishing of Chittagong Hatiya Channel in the Bay of Bengal. The handover process is underway to the concerned police station for taking further legal action against the arrested accused.
