A wild elephant was found dead in Lama upazila of Bandarban on Saturday. The dead body of the elephant was found in Jhiri of Khalkuilla Para, a remote hill in Fansiakhali Union of the upazila.
The dead male elephant is estimated to be around 12 years old. Meanwhile, whether the death of the elephant is normal or not has caused controversy. In the last seven months, 4 elephants died in the upazila.
After seeing a dead wild elephant on Saturday morning, locals informed the union council member Abdur Rahim and the forest department authorities.
Meanwhile, after receiving the news on Saturday afternoon, a team including Dulhazara Safari Park’s doctor Mostafizur Rahman and Lama Forest Department Sadar Range Officer Noor Alam Hafeez went to the spot and collected samples for autopsy of the elephant.
Lama Sadar Range Officer Noor Alam Hafeez said, “Primarily we are thinking that the elephant might have died after falling from a hill or while crossing the barbed wire fence.”
However, local union council member Abdur Rahim said the wild elephant had died of electrocution. On the death of the wild elephant, Lama Divisional Forest Officer SM Kaychar said samples of the elephant have been collected for autopsy. An autopsy report will confirm the cause of death of the elephant.
