At least four people drowned in separate incidents in ponds in Rajshahi and Kurigram on Friday.

Two, including a minor girl, drowned in a pond at Durgapur upazila in Rajshahi on Friday. The deceased were Hira Khatun, 24, daughter of Ershad Ali, of Durgapur sadar upazila, and her niece Megha Khatun, 8, daughter of Morshed Ali, of the same area.

Both were speech-impaired.

Mizanur Rahman, an office assistant at Durgapur Women’s Affairs Office, said that he saw two bodies were floating in the pond on his way to the upazila square at about 8:30am.

He said that he, with the help of the construction workers of the model mosque being built nearby, rescued them and took them to the Durgapur Upazila Health Complex, where on-duty doctors declared them dead.

Nazmul Haque, officer-in-charge of the Durgapur police station, said that it was believed that the niece first drowned in the pond. While trying to save her, the woman might have fallen into the pond and drowned, he said.

The police official said that they would send the body of the woman to the Rajshahi Medical College Hospital morgue because of her husband’s complaint, and the body of the child was handed over to the family.

A case of unnatural death will be filed in this connection, he added.

In Kurigram, two cousins drowned, while playing beside a pond at Khamar Beldoho village in Kurigram’s Bhuruingamari upazila on Friday, reports UNB.

The deceased were Jabir, 2, and his cousin Adib, 2, sons of Abdul Hamid and Anowar Hossain, of the village, respectively.

Officer-in-charge of the Bhuruingamari police station Ruhul Amin said that an unnatural death case would be filed in this regard.
