Around 33,000 more poor, landless and homeless families are expected to get homes from the government before the upcoming Eid-ul-Fitr, Prime Minister’s Office (PMO) sources said.

These semi-pucca tin-shed houses, which are likely to be handed over before the Eid-ul-Fitr, will add an extra dimension to the joy of these landless and homeless people.

PMO officials said keys will be handed over to a total of 32,904 families at a function on April 26.

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina is expected to join the function through a video conference from the Ganabhaban, the official residence of the Prime Minister.

PMO official sources also said that before the handing over function on April 26, Senior Secretary to the Prime Minister's Office Tofazzal Hossain Mia will give a detailed briefing on the issue on Sunday (April 24).

According to the official sources, each of the houses has been constructed in the third phase under the Asrayan-2 project. In this phase, more than 65,000 families will get houses as the gift from the government.

They also said that expenditure for each of the houses in the third phase has been increased compared to the first and second phases. That is why houses will be stronger and more durable.

It should be mentioned that in 1997, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina took a project titled ‘Asrayan’ to rehabilitate the landless and homeless people. The project is being implemented under the direct supervision of the Prime Minister.

As part of the continuation of the project and on the occasion of the Mujib Borsho, 117,329 houses were constructed in the first and second phase. In the third phase, construction work is in progress for 65, 474 houses.

Since 1997, a total of 708,003 families have been rehabilitated so far.

The government has also taken initiative to ensure land and houses for the transgender people.
