Country’s people imbued with the spirit of the Liberation War believe an independent and neutral new Election Commission (EC) will be constituted in the country. Reportedly, on Monday the Search Committee received a total of 322 proposed names for the formation of next EC. The committee will have to propose 10 names to the President for formation of the next EC. And the President will form a new EC from the list of the persons recommended by this search committee.
The list containing the names of former civil and military bureaucrats, judges, police officials, academics and top government officials was published in the website of the Cabinet Division on Monday night for appointments of the Chief Election Commissioner and four other Election Commissioners. Different political parties, professional bodies, eminent persons and individuals proposed the names. Besides, on Tuesday, the search committee also held a meeting with eight senior journalists. We believe the committee tasked with scoping out potential members of the next EC will select honest, competent and courageous people who espouse the spirit of the Liberation War.

However, when the committee is proceeding smoothly to pick 10 personalities which will be proposed to the President, different elements in association with Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP), who introduced the ill-politics of seizing state power through killing-coup-conspiracy in this country, continue making irresponsible, falsehood and misleading statements deliberately over formation of new EC. Since BNP’s birth, it has been standing against the democracy as the party’s founder and military dictator Ziaur Rahman captured the state power illegally and unconstitutionally, violating the country’s democratic values and the spirit of Liberation War through the killing of Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman.
It is worth noting that ahead of parliamentary polls BNP and anti-liberation forces become very active, saying they would not allow any national election in the country without a non-party caretaker government. And later, the cadres of BNP-Jamaat start unleashing a reign of terror by carrying out arson attack, vandalism, brutal torture and repression, like the Pakistani occupation forces, on the country’s common people in the name of movement. When an anti-state political force is continuously getting involved in anti-democratic deeds, it is very hard to uphold the democratic system of the country.
We believe the incumbent government, led by Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, is committed to upholding the democratic system of the country. Her government never influenced the EC in holding elections in the past and it will not do this in the future. Therefore, country’s people are confident that the next general election would be held in a free, fair and neutral manner as none would be allowed to interfere with the process. We hope, the trend of democracy will continue in the country under the leadership of Sheikh Hasina, resisting all the plots of anti-liberation forces and their allies.
