Bangladesh on Sunday confirmed 32 more fatalities from COVID-19 and 3,141 new cases in a daily count, raising the death toll from the pandemic to 1171 and cases to 87,520.
Additional Director General for Health Prof Nasima Sultana in the daily briefing said the recovery count also rose to 18,730 after another 903 patients were released from hospitals in the last 24 hours till 8am.
During the period, the government has tested 14,505 samples across Bangladesh. So the infection rate has been 21.65 percent.
So far, among the total infections, 21.40 percent patients have recovered while 1.34 percent died since the first COVID-19 positive cases were reported in Bangladesh on March 8.
The World Health Organisation declared the virus pandemic on March 11. Bangladesh recorded its first death on March 18.
The government has enforced general holidays to prevent the spread of the virus since March 16.
Now it is implementing zonal lockdown by dividing areas as red, yellow and green zones based on the number of cases.
But deaths and the number of new cases continue to rise with some experts suggesting the peak time of the infection is going on.
Most of the patients are staying at home.
Among the latest 32 deaths, 27 were male and five were female. One was in his 20s and one in 30s while six in their 40s, 10 in their 50s, nine in their 60s, two in their 70s and three in their 80s.
Sixteen of them died in Dhaka division and 11 in Chattogram division while the rest were in other divisions.
Densely populated Dhaka is the worst-hit.
The government urged people to abide by health rules to protect themselves from the infection.
Those include staying at home as much as possible and wearing masks in public places.
People have been asked to maintain a physical distance of at least 3 feet and wash hands with soap.
