30pc work of 220-meter service jetty of Ctg port completed

A 220-meter long service jetty is being constructed on the bank of Karnaphuli River at Barik Building area in Chattogram city at the cost of Tk. 88.34 crore. The construction work of service jetty is progressing fast, sources said. 

Construction farm Pratnu-Ohab-Barik is building the 'Service Jetty' of Chittagong Port Authority. About 30 percent construction work of the project has already been completed.

Visiting the site, it was witnessed that the earth development work, shore protection, construction of administrative building are undergoing beside the No.1 berth at Barik Building point of the river. Pipes and related equipment for the service jetty were brought from China.

It was also found that under the service jetty project at the port number 1 jetty, work on land development, noise protection, administrative, buildings, water tank, dredging are also underway. It was seen that the 32-meter long 136 piles and 900 millimeters diameter from China are there. Each pile weight is about 28 tonnes.

Project engineer Abhishek Das said that the project is underway across 6,672 sqm without the jetty. 1 of 150 tonnes and 1 of 70 tonnes capacity have been brought for piloting. Hundreds of workers are working every day. Hopefully, we can complete the project within the stipulated time, he added. 

"In addition to the jetty, we have a 2,650 square foot three-storey office building, a warehouse or wire house of 3,000 square feet steel, an underground water reservoir of 2,100 cubic meters, a 222 meter long, 8 foot high retaining wall, river bank and shore," said Abhishek Das. 

He also said, ‘‘We are building a drainage system, a 500 KV electric sub-station, a 100-foot-high signal tower. We received the project work on January 3 in 2018. The work is expected to be completed by June 2022.’’

Project Director and Chittagong Port Authority’s Executive Engineer Mizanur Rahman Sarker said that 30 percent work of project has been completed. ‘‘We want to finish the construction work at the fastest time while ensuring quality of work.’’

He also said that in the 5.5-meter draft, a 220-meter-long ship could be crowded on the jetty. If small ships can be crowded together.
