A three-year-old child named Kona Akter was strangled to death by her stepmother Rina Begum at Sarishabari in Jamalpur.
The incident took place at Majalia Bhuiyapara village in Doail union of the upazila on Wednesday night.
Police arrested the accused stepmother on Friday afternoon. Abul Kalam, father of the deceased, filed a murder case with the police station in this connection on Friday night.
It is learned that Kona Akhter died in the river last Wednesday night. Family members after rescuing took her to Sarishabari Upazila Health Complex, where the on-duty doctor declared her dead. The body was buried at night.
A day after the incident, police went to Abul Kalam's house on Friday afternoon and questioned Rina Begum, while she confessed that she threw the body of Kona after strangling her so that everyone thinks she drowned.
In this regard, OC (Investigation) of Sarishabari Police Station Md. Zoaher Hossain Khan said, the stepmother has been arrested and she was sent to the district jail on Saturday morning.
