Three villages in Bangladesh are being developed as ‘SDG Villages’ as part of efforts to implement the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) at the grassroots level.
The selected villages are Mitingachhari in Chandraghona Union under Kaptai Upazila of Rangamati, Pankhali in Dakop Upazila of Khulna, and Nofangar in Bochaganj Upazila of Dinajpur.
Prime Minister Tarique Rahman is scheduled to inaugurate Mitingachhari village as an ‘SDG Village’ on August 10. On the same day, he will virtually inaugurate the other two villages.
During a visit to Mitingachhari ahead of the inauguration, Kaptai Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) Rayhanul Islam said the initiative would focus on achieving the 17 SDG targets through various development activities.
The village development plan will give priority to poverty reduction, preventing waterlogging, ensuring quality education, improving healthcare services, reducing child and maternal mortality, expanding access to safe water and sanitation, empowering women, promoting renewable energy, protecting the environment, increasing tree plantation, developing agriculture and livelihoods, and expanding digital services and technology access.
During the visit, Upazila Assistant Information Officer Md Delwar Hossain, Kaptai Upazila BNP General Secretary Yasin Mamun, Ward No. 100 Headman Arun Talukdar, and local dignitaries were present.
