Three suspected robbers were killed in a gunfight with police after they murdered a night guard while committing robbery at a shop at Becker Bazar udder Daganbhuiyan upazila in Feni on Thursday.
The night guard was identified as Abdul Mannan alias Monu, 45, son of Nur Nabi of Ashrafpur village.
However, the robbers, who were killed in the reported gunfight, could not be immediately identified.
According to police and locals, the suspected robbers strangled Monu to death with a towel as he had chased them and screamed for help when the robbery gang was loading a truck with looted goods from Shariat and Brothers, a grocery store at Becker Bazar, adjacent to Feni-Maijdi highway, in the early hours on Thursday.
Rafiq, the other night guard at the market, sought help from local people by using a mosque loudspeaker. Police patrolling the area arrived at the scene and detained four robbers, while other gang members opened fire on the law enforcement agency.
Police then shot two robbers to death in retaliation. The injured were taken to the Daganbhuiyan Upazila Health Complex where the on duty doctors declared one of them dead.
The bodies of the night guard and robbers were sent to the morgue in Feni General Hospital.
Aslam Sikdar, Officer in Charge (OC) of Daganbhuiyan Police Station said they arrested a member of the robbery gang and recovered weapons, including a homemade pipe gun, three knives and other equipment used in the robbery.
OC Aslam Sikder further said that the police recovered the body of night watchman Mannan and the bodies of the three robbers from the spot and sent them to the morgue of Feni General Hospital for autopsy. Preparations are underway to file separate cases under the Murder, Robbery and Arms Act in connection with the robbery and murder, police said.
