3 killed in Noakhali fire

At least three people were killed and two suffered burn injures in a devastating fire at Chairmanghat of Hatia upazila in Noakhali on Monday night.

Khaled, 70, a shop employee, who was burnt in a fire, died at around 6:30 am on Tuesday after being taken to the burn unit of Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH) in critical condition. 

The fire broke out at the Chairman Ghat in Hatiyar Bayarchar around 10pm on Monday. 15 shops were burnt to ashes. The deceased have been identified as Mahibul Islam Nipu, 37, a resident of Ganipur village in Chaumuhani municipality of Begumganj upazila and Rahmat, 36, an employee of Darbeshbazar area of Hatia upazila.

According to Noakhali Fire Service sources, about 15 businesses were burnt to ashes in a horrific fire at Hatiyar Bayarchar around 10pm. Two people were burnt to death. Another person named Khaled was shifted to the burn unit of Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH) in critical condition. Khaled died  after being taken there.

Apart from this, the businesses that were burnt in the fire include shops selling various goods including oil, groceries, mobiles, medicines and speedboat parts. Hatia Police Station OC Abul Khair, quoting the District Fire Service Station and Subarnachar Fire Service Station said, “Cooking was going on behind deceased Mahibul Islam Nipu’s oil shop at night. At this time the oil of the drum spilled and fell into the oven. We have learned that this was the beginning of the fire.”

He added that two people were burnt to death when they got stuck in the kitchen during the fire. Another died after being taken DMCH. He received burns in 70-80 per cent of his body. Two units of the district fire service station and one unit of the Subarnachar fire service brought the fire under control after a two-hour effort. The extent of the damage is not yet known; Details can be told at the end of the investigation.

However, traders have claimed a loss of around Tk 10 crore.
