3 get death penalty for killing NSU student Payel

A Dhaka court on Sunday sentenced three persons to death for killing Saidur Rahman Payel, a BBA student of North South University (NSU), reports BSS.

The convicts are Johnny, a Hanif Paribahan bus supervisor, bus driver Jamal Hossain and his assistant Faisal Hossain.

Judge Abu Jafar Mohammad Kamruzzaman of Dhaka’s Speedy Trial Tribunal-1 pronounced the verdict when the accused were produced before the tribunal from jail in the morning.

According to the case, Payel went missing on the night of July 21, 2016, after leaving Chittagong for Dhaka in a Hanif Paribahan bus with his two friends Akibur Rahman Adar and Mohiuddin Shanto.

On July 23, Gazaria police recovered his body from a canal under the Bhaterchar Bridge in Munshiganj.

Bus supervisor Johnny was arrested from the city’s Motijheel and driver Jamal Hossain and his brother and assistant Faisal Hossain were arrested from Arambagh.

On July 24, Payel’s uncle Golam Sarwardi Biplob filed a murder case against the three.

All of the accused gave confessional statements under section 164 in court.

Gazaria police filed a chargesheet against them on October 3 of that year.

Out of 24 witnesses in the case, 14 testified before the tribunal at different times. Also, four witnesses testified for the accused.

The trial of the case started at the Additional District and Sessions Judge’s Court in Munshiganj.

Later, at the request of the family, the Public Security Department of the Home Ministry issued a circular on December 24, 2018, directing the case to be transferred to the Chittagong Speedy Trial Tribunal.

Afterwards the trial of the case started on November 17, 2019 at the Dhaka Speedy Trial Tribunal-1.
