A three-day short course on wind energy began yesterday Rajshahi University of Engineering and Technology (RUET).

The course titled “Harnessing the Wind: Analytical, Numerical and Experimental Approaches to Wind Energy” is being organised by the Institute of Energy and Environmental Studies (IEES). A total of 108 participants including teachers, students, and professionals working in the field of wind energy are taking part in the training.

The course includes a quiz competition and group discussions, which will help participants share their experiences and knowledge with each other.

The inaugural session was addressed by Director of the Institutional Quality Assurance Cell Prof Imdadul Haque, Director of the Institute of Information and Communication Technology Prof Zahurul Islam Sarker, and Director of IEES Prof Nurul Islam. IEES Associate Professor Dr Mahadi Hassan Masud chaired the session.

Seven experts from China, Australia, Sweden, and RUET are conducting the sessions as resource persons.

Prof Nurul Islam said wind energy is a clean, renewable, and cost-effective source of electricity. He mentioned that it helps reduce greenhouse gas emissions and operating costs after installation. He also noted some challenges, including dependence on wind, visual impacts, and possible effects on wildlife.

Dr Mahadi Hassan Masud said wind is a naturally replenishing energy source and wind turbines do not release any harmful gases or pollutants during their operation. Though the initial cost is high, the running cost is low compared to fossil fuel-based energy.

He added that the wind energy sector creates many job opportunities in areas like manufacturing, installation, and maintenance.
