Three suspected cattle thieves were killed in a mass beating at Prembagh village under Abhaynagar upazila in Jashore early morning on Monday. One of the deceased was identified as Sohel, 30. Age of the two other victims were between from 35 to 45 years.
Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Abhaynagar Police Station Tajul Islam confirmed the matter.
According to the OC, a gang of thieves came to the village around 4:00 am by a pickup van and stole three cows from the house of one Khorshed Ali. Sensing their presence, the residents of the house started shouting. Later, the locals came there and made announcement on a nearby mosque loudspeaker to catch thieves.
Three of the thieves were caught at a rail crossing at the area. Two of them died on the spot by mass beating of the villagers. Another suspected thief, injured in the mob beating, died on the way to the hospital. Police recovered the bodies and seized the pickup van.
A case was filed with Abhaynagar police station in this connection.
