Following the theft of 110 gold pieces from a gold shop in Bogura New Market, three suspects have been apprehended, with police recovering a substantial amount of stolen gold.
The arrests were made after a series of raids conducted over six days across several districts, including Gazipur, Chandpur, Narsingdi, Feni, Comilla, and Chattogram.
Superintendent of Police Sudeep Kumar Chakraborty provided details during a press briefing on Thursday afternoon. The arrested individuals are Rubel, also known as Angul Kanta Rubel, from Muradnagar, Comilla; Ibrahim, alias Nayan, from Fatulla, Narayanganj; and Shahajalal from Dakshin Sadar, Comilla.
They are believed to be part of an inter-district gang of thieves, with multiple theft cases against each of them in various districts.
The theft at Taufiq Jewelers in Bogura occurred on April 20, prompting immediate police action. Through intensive operations spanning six districts, Ibrahim was arrested from Chittagong's Patia police station area, leading to the subsequent arrest of Rubel from Chittagong Metropolitan's Ferozshah Colony area.
Further interrogation of Rubel revealed his involvement in selling stolen gold to Shahajalal of Bismillah Jewellers in Comilla.
Shahajalal was subsequently arrested, and 17 bhori, 08 anna, 04 rati of various gold and gold ornaments were recovered from him.
Additional information obtained from Ibrahim led to the recovery of the lock cutter used in the theft from a forest near Dhaka Rangpur Maha Road in Bogura Sadar Upazila. Ibrahim confessed to being responsible for cutting the lock of the gold shop during the theft and discarding the cutter in the forest while fleeing.
During interrogation, Rubel and Ibrahim disclosed the modus operandi of their gang, which included reconnaissance, strategic roles during theft, and coordinated escape routes. The gang utilized various communication apps to avoid detection and frequently changed residences following theft incidents. Superintendent of Police Snigdh Akhtar, Abdur Rashid, Suman Ranjan, Sharafat Islam, Saihan Oliullah, and Inspector Shahinuzzaman were also present during the press briefing, emphasizing ongoing efforts to apprehend remaining suspects and recover the stolen gold.
