Police have filed a case against 3,500 unidentified people over Friday’s attack on the shrine of Nurul Haque, widely known locally as "Nural Pagla", in Rajbari's Goaland upazila.

Sub-inspector Selim filed the case early Saturday bringing allegations of attacking police, obstructing government duty, vandalising government property, and arson, said Rakibul Islam, officer-in-charge of Goalandaghat Police Station.

"We are trying to arrest the accused, especially by identifying them from the footage," the OC said.

Hundreds of people attacked a "darbar sharif", exhumed the body of Nurul Haque from his grave, and set it on fire on Friday.

Followers of Nurul, who claimed to be a pir (spiritual leader), and locals under the banner of "Iman-Aqeedah Rokkha Committee" locked into a clash after Juma prayers.

One person was killed, and 22 others, including a journalist, were injured.

When police and local administration tried to stop them, the protesters vandalised the vehicles of the UNO, the additional superintendent of police, and the officer-in-charge of Goaland Ghat Police Station. Five policemen and two administration officials were injured after being beaten and pelted with stones.

The OC said the case was filed over the attack on police, adding that a murder case will be filed once the deceased's family comes forward. Police will also record cases if any other victims of the attack wish to lodge complaints, he added.
