With that, the virus death toll rose to 1,049, cases surged to 78,052 and recoveries to 16,747 since the detection of the first patients in Bangladesh on March 8.

Additional Director General for Health Prof Nasima Sultana disclosed those figures at the daily briefing.
She said they had tested 15,772 samples in 55 labs during that time.

The World Health Organisation (WHO) declared the virus pandemic on March 11.
The government has been trying to contain the virus by announcing general holidays since March 26.

Finance Minister AHM Mustafa Kamal proposed the 2020-21 budget in the parliament on Thursday giving the health sector the highest priority.

“We all are aware that the whole world is in dire stress because of the Covid-19 pandemic, and Bangladesh is no exception. Like other countries in the world, public health and public life in Bangladesh is facing challenges because of the pandemic,” he said.
Among the total infections so far, 21.46 percent patients have recovered in Bangladesh while 1.34 percent died.

Nearly 75 percent Covid-19 patients are taking treatment from their homes.

Among the 37 deaths announced on Thursday, 30 are male and seven female. Two are in their 30s, four in their 40s, eight in their 50s, 22 in their 60s and one in his 70s.

According to the division-wise data, 20 deaths took place in Dhaka division and seven in Chattogram division while rests are in other divisions.

Prof Nasima dubbed Dhaka, Narayanganj and Chattogram as Covid-19 “hotspots” because the maximum numbers of cases were detected in the three cities.

As of June 9, Dhaka city has been considered as the worst-affected with 21,495 Covid-19 cases, according to Institute of Epidemiology, Disease Control and Research (IEDCR).

People have been asked to maintain three health directives — wearing masks, physical distancing and washing hands by soap — to contain the spread of Covid-19.
