The work of the second phase of the Matarbari deep sea port is set to be completed by 2029, and commercial mother vessels will start operating in 2030, according to Brigadier General (Retd.) Dr M Sakhawat Hossain, adviser to the Ministry of Shipping and the Ministry of Textiles and Jute.

Dr Sakhawat Hossain made this announcement during a press conference on Monday evening at a luxury hotel in Cox's Bazar, following an inspection of the Matarbari deep sea port.

He mentioned that the first phase of the Matarbari deep sea port has already been completed. The second phase will be finished by 2029, allowing mother vessels to start operating commercially from 2030. Currently, mother vessels cannot directly access Chittagong Port, but they will be able to do so at Matarbari. Two long terminals are being constructed, which will enable four mother vessels to discharge simultaneously. Earlier, at 11:00am, the advisor attended a meeting with representatives from JICA, the Chittagong Port Authority, and various development project officials at the administrative conference room of the Coal Power Plant in Matarbari. In the meeting, the officials presented a video presentation report on the development plans and progress of the Matarbari deep sea port. Dr Sakhawat Hossain urged the concerned authorities to ensure the timely completion of the project.

Later, he toured the power plant, SPM project, Matarbari Channel, and the breakwater project via a Navy boat.

Adviser M Sakhawat Hossain also visited the under-construction Lighthouse Project in Cox's Bazar on Sunday afternoon.
