Dhaka Custom House Preventive Unit seized 2kg of Liquid Gold from Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport (HSIA) Toilet on Friday.
Dhaka Custom House Deputy Commissioner (Preventive) Mokaddis Hossain confirmed the successful recovery of approximately 2 kilograms of liquid gold from the toilet of HSIA. The operation was carried out based on secret information, leading to a raid in the washroom and toilet adjacent to the TGR warehouse at the airport.
During the operation, authorities discovered eight oval-shaped objects wrapped in blue scotch tape abandoned in the toilet drain hole. Initial suspicions were that these objects contained gold.
Subsequently, the scotch tape was opened in the presence of various agencies working at the airport, revealing a wet paste of raw gold. The gold paste, tested by gold hard stones and acid, weighed around 2 kilograms and was of 24-carat quality.
However, experts predict that the weight of the seized gold might slightly decrease due to liquid evaporation, with approximately 9.50 grams per 100 grams reducing to 10 grams. As a result, the final weight of the seized gold is estimated to be around 1 kilogram and 890 grams, with a market value of approximately Tk 1.89 crore.
Notably, no passenger has been implicated in the incident thus far. The seized gold has been forfeited in favor of the case and the State, following the provisions of the Customs Act.
