The Asian New Talent competition will spotlight 12 films by emerging filmmakers. Highlights include China’s As the Water Flows, Japan’s Brand New Landscape, India’s Victoria, and Sri Lanka’s Riverstone. This section aims to promote new voices in Asian cinema.
In the documentary category, five films from Iran, Mexico, China, Spain, and Laos have been selected. The animation competition will feature works from Australia, Japan, China, and a China-U.S. co-production of Tom and Jerry: Forbidden Compass.
The live-action short film competition includes 10 titles, with strong entries from China, Iran, France, Portugal, and Spain.
The animated short category features five international films, including I Am Not Here Anymore from Poland-France and Triassic Cuddle from Romania.
Oscar-winning Italian filmmaker Giuseppe Tornatore will lead the international jury. The festival also introduces a new Asia Now section and merges its film market with the Shanghai TV Festival’s market. The Shanghai TV Festival will be held from June 23 to June 27.
