People in 27 upazilas of nine coastal districts have been affected by the high tide caused by cyclone Yaas.
Cyclone Yaas had crossed the Indian coast on Wednesday morning.
At least two deaths were reported as Cyclone Yaas triggered storms and floods in the coastal areas of Bangladesh.
In Bhola, a man was killed after being hit by a falling tree branch during a storm triggered by Yaas in Lalmohan upazila on Tuesday.
Meanwhile, four-year-old Jinia died on Wednesday afternoon after drowning near her house in Morrelganj upazila of Bagerhat.
State Minister for Disaster Management and Relief Dr Md Enamur Rahman said this at a press conference on the overall cyclone situation held in his secretariat office on Wednesday.
Enamur Rahman said , ”We were not affected by the cyclone here. A total of 27 upazilas of Satkhira, Khulna, Bagerhat, Pirojpur, Barguna, Patuakhali, Bhola, Noakhali and Laxmipur districts have been affected by the high tide”.
The affected upazilas include Shyamnagar, Asashuni, Koyra, Dakop, Paikgachha, Sharankhola, Mongla, Morelganj, Mathbaria, Barguna Sadar, Patharghata, Amtali, Patuakhali Sadar, Galachipa, Rangabali, Dashmina, Mirjaganj ,Borhanuddin, Bhola Sadar,Hatia, Ramgati and Kamalnagar.
The state minister said the deputy commissioners have been allotted adequate food items and funds to provide humanitarian assistance in response to any disaster. Besides, 18,500 packets of dry and other food items have been allotted to the deputy commissioners to provide humanitarian assistance to the victims in 28 upazilas of nine coastal districts due to rising tidal waters due to cyclone Yaas.
The state minister said control rooms have been set up in coastal districts and upazilas to exchange cyclone information. The NDRCC (National Disaster Response Coordination Center) of the Ministry of Disaster Management and Relief has been working round the clock to collect and exchange information on the cyclone.
Enamur Rahman said, ‘In addition to the 6,000 volunteers from the Cyclone Preparedness Program (CPP) in the coastal areas, volunteers from Scouts, Red Crescent Society, Ansar, VDP are working. The shelters were ready to bring people to the shelter if the storm hits. Adequate humanitarian assistance was provided in advance. In addition, adequate masks and health equipment were ensured for the management of the shelter in compliance with the health regulations.
Disaster Management and Relief Secretary Mohsin said,” Initially some damage has been calculated. A self-contained report will be made at another meeting. We will do it in a short time when the field work is done”.
According to the latest information received from the district administration, the state minister also highlighted the condition of 14 coastal districts affected by cyclone Yass.
Patuakhali
Tidal water has risen but is below the danger line. About 14,000 people took shelter in 172 shelters last evening. They returned this morning. These people come to the shelter at high tide and go home at low tide. It is raining a little.
Satkhira
Currently the weather is normal. Tidal water is 3 to 6 feet higher than normal. In some places, tidal water is overflowing. 1292 shelters were kept ready in the district. Last night, 280 people took shelter in different shelters of Shyamnagar upazila. At present they have gone to their respective homes.
Barguna
At present the sky is cloudy and the tidal water has increased by 2-3 feet more than normal. Some parts of the embankment have broken and some tidal water has entered. The shelter housed 520 people, who later returned home. It is raining a little. There was no damage from Hurricane Yass.
Jhalakati
A total of 499 shelters were set up in the district. 497 people have taken shelter in the shelter. The tidal water level is above the danger level. No casualties were reported.
Pirojpur
In the middle of Mathbaria upazila, 1012 fish ponds and a few acres of vegetable gardens have gone under water due to the breach of the Char Beri dam. 250 people have taken shelter in the middle char shelter. Dry food has been supplied from the upazila. The tidal water has risen 3 feet above normal. 256 shelters were kept ready.
Barisal
The weather is normal. One thousand 71 shelters were kept ready. No one took refuge in the shelter. Tidal water is slightly higher than normal. No casualties were reported.
Bhola
The district has been windy. Currently the weather is normal. The tidal water rose 23 feet above normal. But now it has come down. About 250 kutcha houses have been damaged in the remote char and 900 head of cattle have been swept away in the tidal waters. 691 shelters were kept ready. 2,000 people took shelter in these shelters, but now these people are returning home.
Bagerhat
Due to the increase in tidal water, tidal water has entered 2021 villages of Morelganj, Sharankhola and Mongla upazilas. 2,800 people have been affected. The local administration has made preparations to supply dry food (chira, molasses and food saline) to help the victims. It was sunny in the morning. It is raining heavily at the moment. The weather is normal.
Similar situations witnessed in other districts including Chandpur, Lakshipur, Khulna, Feni, Chattogram, and Noakhali.
