Approximately a 250 kilogram (kg) cylinder-like 'bomb' was unearthed from the under construction site of third terminal at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport (HSIA) in the capital on Wednesday.
The construction workers found a cylinder shaped bomb while they were working at the piling construction site of the third terminal in the morning. The construction workers and engineers informed the matter to the authorities concerned immediately.
HSIA Director Group Captain AHM Touhid-ul Ahsan confirmed the matter to Bangladesh Post.
“On information, the bomb disposal unit of the Air Force rushed to the spot. After an inspection, they confirmed that it is a 250 kg GP Bomb,” he said.
“Experts immediately said that there were explosives inside the cylinder. Later they took it to Rasulpur base of the Air Force to deactivate it. The Air Force will defuse the 250 kg bomb-like object there,” he added.
It is believed that the bomb was thrown from air during the Liberation War in 1971.
However, no casualties were reported in the incident.
