23rd Nat’l Art Exhibition begins

The 23rd National Art Exhibition, the biennale art exhibition by Bangladesh Shilpakala Academy, kicked off yesterday at National Art Gallery.

The exhibition features 322 artworks of different mediums and genres by 310 artists, said speakers at a press conference at the seminar room of National Art Gallery of BSA on Sunday.

Bangladesh Shilpakala Academy’s director general Liaquat Ali Lucky and director of fine arts department of the academy Ashraful Alam Poplu, among others, were present on the occasion.

‘This year huge number of artworks of diverse genres and styles were submitted by contemporary local artists from across the country’, said Liaquat Ali Lucky adding that Bangladesh Shilpakala Academy has been organising the National Art Exhibition since 1975.

The 322 artworks which will be displayed at the exhibition have been selected by a five-member jury from around 1500 artworks submitted by 850 artists. Artists Nasreen Begum, Mostafizul Haque, Sheikh Sadi Bhuiyan, Mohammad Iqbal and Anisuzzman selected the works.

The selected artworks comprise of 159 paintings, 45 sculptures, 50 prints, 37 installations and eight crafts. Besides, the exhibition will feature seven performance arts, informed Lucky.

A five-member jury consisting of artist Abdus Shakoor Shah, Ranjit Das, Farida Zaman, Mohammad Yunus and architect Shamsul Wares selected the award-winning works. 

Prime minister’s political adviser HT Imam inaugurated the festival and hand over the awards, in presence of state minister for cultural affairs KM Khalid, cultural affairs secretary Abu Hena Mostofa Kamal and former finance minister Abul Maal Abdul Muhith.

The exhibition will remain open till July 21.
