Police have recovered foreign whisky, locally made liquor, heroin and tapentadol in separate anti-drug drives in different areas of Cumilla city and Sadar South, and arrested five people.
In a related drive, 24 people were arrested for drug consumption and other offences, of whom 23 were sentenced to different terms through mobile courts.
Police said separate drives were conducted in Kotwali Model Police Station areas on August 20 on the instructions of the officer-in-charge. During the drives, Amena, 27, was arrested with two bottles of foreign whisky from a field near Khilbari in Aranyapur.
Police also recovered 40 litres of locally made liquor abandoned near the Haddi Khola slaughterhouse area of Sujanagar under Cumilla City Corporation’s Ward No. 17.
In addition, Md Akram Hossain Riaz, 24, Md Naim, 23, and Md Babul, 38, were arrested with 51 packets of brown-coloured heroin from a road in front of Haji Manju Housing in Champaknagar Satara area of South Durgapur Union.
Another person, Md Mohsin alias Saikat, 30, was arrested in front of Raihan Mia’s house, east of the new Jame Mosque at Pakkar Matha in Kaptan Bazar.
Police said regular cases were filed against the arrestees under the Narcotics Control Act and they were produced before the court.
Meanwhile, 24 people were arrested in a special drive in Kotwali Model Police Station areas on the same day for drug consumption and other offences. They were produced before the Senior Judicial Magistrate, 1st Court, Cumilla, for legal action through a mobile court.
The court sentenced two people to one month of rigorous imprisonment and a fine of Tk 500 each, one to one month of rigorous imprisonment and a fine of Tk 1,000, and 19 to 15 days of rigorous imprisonment and a fine of Tk 500 each. Another person was sentenced to one day of rigorous imprisonment, while another was fined Tk 100.
Kotwali Model Police Station said such drives would continue to curb drugs and crime. #EK
