22 officers freed on bail hours after they land in jail

Twenty-two officials, including six former Managing Directors (MDs) of Barapukuria Coal Mining Company Limited (BCMCL), who were landed in jail in a coal scam case in Dinajpur on Wednesday, have been released on bail. 

They were released from Dinajpur District Jail on Thursday morning, confirmed Jailer Faridur Rahman Rubel. 

Earlier on Wednesday, Judge Mahmudul Karim of Dinajpur District and Sessions Special Judge's Court ordered them to be sent to jail, rejecting their plea. 

The accused appeared before the court and applied for bail, the court denied it. Later in the afternoon, the defence lawyer Nuruzzaman Jahani presented the documents of the High Court Division and the court granted them bail.

It may be mentioned that from January 2006 to July 19 in 2018, 1,43,728.92 metric tons of coal was stolen from Barapukuria coal mine. The estimated value of which is about 243.28 crore. 

Regarding the incident a chaos broke out and the coal-fired thermal power plant was shut down. Manager (administration) of Barapukuria Coal Mining Company Anisur Rahman filed a case in this connection with Parbatipur Model Police Station on July 24 in 2018, naming 19 people. 

The case was handed over to the ACC office as it was included in the ACC schedule. 

Later, the case was investigated by ACC Deputy Director Samsul Alam. On July 24 in 2019, charge sheets were filed against 23 people, including seven former managing directors. 

According to the charge sheet, the accused were involved in the embezzlement of 1,43,727.99 metric tons of coal from January 2006 to July 19 in 2018.
