21 die, 1,602 new cases

Coronavirus cases and deaths continue to break records in Bangladesh every passing day.
In the latest update, the government confirmed 1,602 new patients and 21 deaths on Monday.

Those were the highest single-day rise of new cases and deaths in 24 hours time.
With that, the number of cases soared to 23,870 and deaths 349, Prof Dr Nasima Sultana, Additional Director General for Health said at a regular briefing.

Besides, 212 people recovered from the virus during the period till 8 am on Monday, she said.
The global death toll from coronavirus pandemic reached 316,671 as of Monday morning.

Since first reported in China in December last year, coronavirus has so far infected 4,801,875 people.
The World Health Organisation declared the virus pandemic on March 11.

Bangladesh recorded the first cases on March 8 and first death on March 18. Prof Nasima said the recovery rate is 19.21 percent against the total number of detected cases, and the mortality rate is 1.46 percent in Bangladesh.

Among the deceased, one was between 11 and 20 years of age, two between 31 and 40, six between 41 and 50, eight between 51 and 60, and five between 61 and 70, she said. Some 231 more people were taken to isolation in the last 24 hours.
