In a landmark event, the 200th staging of the play 'Shikhandi Kotha' took place on Friday, marking a significant milestone in its journey. The play, which delves into the life of Raton Molla from Hijoltoli village, portrays the challenges faced by individuals of the third gender. Born into the family of Ramzed Molla, Ratan undergoes a unique physical development, neither fully male nor female, leading to societal rejection and familial estrangement.

Originally premiered on September 25, 2002, by Mahakal Natya Sampraday, the play has been written by Anan Zaman, an Associate Professor of Drama and Playwriting at Jahangirnagar University, and directed by Professor Rashid Harun of the same university . Over the years, 'Shikhandi Kotha' has garnered acclaim, with its 50th and 100th productions held in 2006 and 2010 respectively, at notable venues like Bangladesh Mohila Samity and the National Theater. The 200th exhibition, held recently, featured commemorative awards for artists who have been part of this journey since its inception, alongside an informative memoir and a discussion meeting. The play stars Mir Zahid Hasan and features a talented cast including Shahnewaz, Polly Biswas, and others, underlining its enduring impact on audiences in Bangladesh and beyond, with screenings in Tripura, West Bengal, and Bihar, India.

'Shikhandi Kotha' continues to resonate as a poignant artistic portrayal of the joys and sorrows faced by third gender individuals, emphasizing themes of identity, acceptance, and societal norms. The 200th staging stands as a testament to its enduring relevance and contribution to the cultural landscape.
