200 tonnes iron stolen from Kanchan Bridge in Dinajpur

Kanchan Bridge, known as the old railway iron bridge built over the Punarbhava River, flows along the side of Dinajpur city.

Once, this bridge brought a massive change in Dinajpur's communication system and economy. But the old bridge has been abandoned since the construction of the new bridge in 2017.

Sources said 200 tonnes of iron have been stolen from the old bridge since 2017. The market value of this iron is Tk one crore.

When this correspondent visited the spot he found the sleepers and iron of the middle part are missing. Senior officials of Dinajpur Railway said that these irons have been stolen.

However, the officials are shifting the responsibility to each other by making irresponsible statements in this regard.

Sources said that the government has lost crores of taka in revenue due to the negligence of the railway authorities.

Meanwhile, on Tuesday, a young man named Nahid Islam handed over to the Dinajpur Railway (GRP) Police Station along with ERC clips of 11 railway lines stolen from the newly constructed bridge.

A case has been filed with Dinajpur Railway Police Station in this regard.

Assistant Executive Engineer in Dinajpur Md Rakib Hasan said that one has been arrested. When asked about the ongoing theft of 200 tonnes of iron since 2017, he asked to contact IOW officer Saiful Islam. However, Saiful Islam avoided commenting on the matter.

Lalmonirhat Divisional Officer (DEN) Md Shipon said, "I took charge just three months ago. Today, a thief was caught, I came to know about the matter. I am not aware of any iron theft since 2017. Necessary action will be taken after investigation.”
