We applaud the special tribunal’s judgement for sentencing 20 students to death and life imprisonment to another five in a case lodged over the murder of Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (Buet) student Abrar Fahad.

The brutal incident shocked the people of the whole country. However, it is good to note that the convicts are being given maximum punishments to stop repetition of such heinous incident. This judgement would help avert recurrence of  such incidents at educational institutions. Besides, this judgment will also send a strong warning message to the offenders that no one is above the law.

We hope all the murderers will

be brought to justice

Abrar Fahad was brutally beaten to death by some leaders and workers of the then BUET unit of Chhatra League over his posts on Facebook on the dreadful night of October 7, 2019. The tribunal in its observation says the convicts tortured and subsequently killed Abrar based on the false allegation of being an activist of Shibir (Islami Chhatra Shibir). This brutal murder incident triggered a firestorm of protests on campuses across the country.

It has been noticed that since long almost all junior students studying at different public universities are still being tortured mentally or physically in their respective residential halls or dormitories by the seniors in many ways under the very nose of the authorities. We think this judgement will create fear in the mind of the offenders so that they do not dare to commit similar crimes again and discourage them to get involved in such ragging.

We believe no criminal will be spared committing such murder in the future. It is very unfortunate to note that both Abrar and his killers were brilliant students and they are the victims of the politics. Therefore, the mainstream political parties must control their students’ wings in order to free the student politics from criminalisation.

We appreciate the quick disposal of the case and the judgement. We hope all the murderers will be brought to justice and we want quick execution of the judgement.
