Patuakhali Science and Technology University (PSTU) has taken disciplinary action against 20 students involved in a recent ragging incident.

The decision came after a thorough investigation, which confirmed the students' involvement in the misconduct. The university’s Student Disciplinary Board made the ruling during its 40th meeting.

According to an official order released on Thursday, by PSTU's Registrar, Professor Dr Mohammad Mamunur Rashid, with approval from the Vice-Chancellor, the students have faced various penalties, including expulsions and fines.

Four students—Tanvirul Islam Siam and Pritom Karon from the Faculty of Business Administration, and Junaid Hossain and Yunus Khan Ifti from the Faculty of Agriculture—have been expelled for up to three semesters. Another nine students have been expelled from the university dormitory for one year and fined Tk 5,000 each. These students include Saurav Sarker Shaon, Jihad Hasan Jim, Golam Rabbi, Mohammad Omar Faruk, Khaled Mahmud Rupak, Khalid Hasan, Istiak Ahmed Riyad, Mohammad Junaid Al Habib Jinnah, and Sahib Ahmed.

Three other students AM Jobayer, Mohammad Sohel, and Sonaton Chandra Roy will also serve a six-month expulsion from the dormitory and be fined Tk 3,000. Additionally, Caching Mong Marma, Minhajul Islam, and Mohammad Noor Mohammad Sarkar will each pay a Tk 3,000 fine, while Supel Chakma faces a Tk 1,000 fine.

The ragging incident occurred on the night of November 23, 2024, at the M. Keramat Ali Hall. Following reports of students falling ill due to the ragging, the university administration quickly launched an investigation. A five-member committee was formed to probe the incident, and its findings led to the disciplinary actions.

The university has stated that expelled students must stay off campus and will not be allowed to enter the dormitories. All fines must be paid into the university’s fund within 15 working days. Failure to comply will result in further disciplinary measures.
