A total of 20,000 hectares of lands have been brought under wheat cultivation this season in five upazila of the district with the production target of 70, 000 metric tons of wheat.

The Department of Agriculture Extension (DAE) is expecting to achieve bumper wheat production in the district during the current season.

DAE office sources said farmers are showing their interest for wheat cultivation as wheat cultivation is lucrative and less expensive.

Tariqul Islam, a farmer of Sabouspara village in Debiganj upazila, said "I cultivated wheat on two bighas of land last year and I got 20-maund of wheat from the land. Per maund of wheat was sold Taka 800 to 1000. I earned Taka 12,000 after meeting all expenses.”

This year, Tariqul has cultivated wheat on three bighas of land and he is expecting a bumper production.

The DAE has supplied all necessary seeds, fertilizers, pesticides, and other agriculture inputs at a free of cost among the farmers to achieve the production target.

Besides, the department has also imparted training to the farmers to make them acquainted with the modern methods of wheat cultivation.
