A mobile court in Lalmonirhat's Patgram Municipality has sentenced a girl's father and a relative of her to six months in jail for child marriage. The incident took place on Sunday night in Dhabalsati area of Ward 4 of Patgram Municipality.
The convicts are the girl's father Bablu Mia (50) and another close relative of her Abdur Rahman (50). After learning about the incident, Patgram Upazila Executive Officer (UNO) and Executive Magistrate Mashiur Rahman conducted a drive in the area and then punished the offenders.
According to mobile court and police sources, UNO and Patgram Police Station OC Sumon Kumar Mahanta raided the bride’s house in Dhabalasati village, Ward 4, Patgram Municipality around 1pm on Monday.
Sensing their presence, the bride, groom and some other members of the family fled. However, the child marriage was completed before the police operation. Police arrested the bride’s father and the other convict.
Later that night, the police produced them in a mobile court at the bride's house. They pleaded guilty on the charge of child marriage in the mobile court. At that time, the court sentenced the two to six months imprisonment.
Patgram Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Sumon Kumar Mahanta confirmed the incident and said the convicts of child marriage, would be sent to Lalmonirhat District Jail on Monday.
