Two meritorious students from the Department of Economics at the University of Dhaka (Du) have been awarded the ‘Dhaka University Economics 1976 Memorial Trust Fund Scholarship’. The recipients are Md. Tanvir Mahtab Wadud and Mst. Hajera Khatun Maria.

Vice-Chancellor Professor Dr. Niaz Ahmed Khan presented the scholarship cheques to the students at a ceremony held at the Vice-Chancellor’s office lounge on Monday.

It is worth mentioning that former students from the Department of Economics, who graduated in 1976, established this trust fund to support underprivileged students currently enrolled in the department’s undergraduate programme.

Treasurer of the University of Dhaka, Professor Dr. M. Jahangir Alam Chowdhury, presided over the event. Among others, Dean of the Faculty of Social Sciences Professor Dr. Tayebur Rahman, Chairperson of the Department of Economics Professor Masuda Yasmin, Acting Registrar Munshi Shams Uddin Ahmed, donor representative Professor Dr. Munir Kuddus, former Information Commissioner Suraiya Begum, Ramendra Chandra Basak, and Golam Hafiz Ahmed were present.

Congratulating the awardees, Vice-Chancellor Professor Dr. Niaz Ahmed Khan expressed hope that such initiatives would continue to inspire alumni and well-wishers to contribute towards the welfare of underprivileged students. He emphasized that alongside resolving various institutional challenges, efforts are underway to improve students’ quality of life — and alumni support plays a vital role in this endeavor.

At the event, donor representatives also handed over a cheque of Tk 1 lakh to the Vice-Chancellor to enhance the trust fund’s principal capital.
