1st phase Elevated Expressway to complete by January 2020

The first phase of the 19.73-kilometre Dhaka Elevated Expressway project will be completed by January next year. Road Transport and Bridges Minister Obaidul Quader said this while visiting the progress of the construction work at Kawla in the Airport area on Tuesday. He said, “The first phase of the project connecting Airport Road with Banani rail crossing will be completed by January 2020 while the second and third phases from Banani Rail Station to to Kutubkhali on Dhaka-Chattogram Highway via Moghbazar rail crossing will end by March 2022.”

According to project information, work of the project is divided into three segments—7.45 kilometres from Airport to Banani, will be constructed in the first part, 5.85 kilometres from Banani to Moghbazar in the second part, and 6.43 kilometres from Moghbazar to Kutubkhali in the final part. The project work starting from the airport will reach Kutubkhali of the Dhaka-Chattogram highway via Kuril, Banani, Mohakhali, Tejgaon, Moghbazar, Kamalapur, Sayedabad and Jatrabari.

About the project construction progress the minister informed that, installation of 1,333 working pile driving, 302 pile cap, 83 cross beam, 187 column full and 128 partially completed, 186 eye girder has completed thus far. Besides, 14 spans have already been installed on eye girder, he informed. After completion of the project, city commuters will enter a new era of communication. Hundreds of buses and trucks will reach one point from another without creating any pressure on the city streets. This will save time of the travellers and businessmen as it will take 15-20 minutes to reach Kutubkhali from Airport, which now takes more than three hours.

Through the support project, the government is supporting four components to implement the Dhaka elevated expressway under Public Private Partnership (PPP). These are land allocation and rehabilitation and shifting utility facilities for constructing the expressway. Main project cost has been estimated at Tk 8940 crore. Of the amount, Italian-Thai Development Public Company Ltd invested Tk 6,444.31 crore and the rest Tk 2413.80 crore will be spent by the government from its own fund as Viability Gap Fund (VGF). The construction of the first ever elevated expressway project in Dhaka officially commenced on April 1, 2018.
