19 tonnes padlock, rexine seized at Benapole port

Customs officials seized a large consignment of padlock and rexine weighing nearly 19 tonnes at Benapole port on charges of evading Tk 1.2 crore tariff after those were imported from India under false declaration.

Officials briefed the media on the seizure on Saturday two days after a team led by Customs Commissioner Azizur Rahman seized the consignment from Shed No. 28 of the port on Thursday.

According to customs sources, Jashore- Shafi Iron Trades imported 1,051 packs of padlock and rexine from India with the declaration of parts and accessories.

Tipped-off, Customs Commissioner and his team inspected the consignment and seized an additional 18 tones 982 kg of high dutiable padlock and rexine. The team then realised Tk 61.25 lakh fine from the consignment and collected Tk 1.02 crore in revenue Meanwhile, the customs authorities suspended the license of clearing and forwarding (C&F) agent Talukdar Traders, which processed the necessary documents.
