A mobile court has sentenced 18 brokers to varying jail terms after they were detained during a raid at Mymensingh Medical College Hospital on Tuesday.

From morning until noon, Rapid Action Battalion (RAB-14) conducted an operation in the hospital’s emergency, outpatient, and inpatient departments, arresting 18 individuals—including five women—who were found luring patients away from the hospital to private clinics, hospitals, and diagnostic centres.

According to RAB-14 Company Commander Shamsuzzaman, the arrested individuals had long been deceiving patients and pushing them towards unnecessary private treatment, causing severe financial losses. Some patients even lost everything due to the scams run by these brokers.

Following the raid, Executive Magistrate Md Shafiqul Islam of the district administration sentenced the brokers through a mobile court. The sentences range from one to two months in jail, depending on the severity of their offences.

RAB also reported that several of those arrested had been caught before, served time, and returned to the same activities after release.

This is not the first such operation. On 22 April this year, RAB detained 14 members of a similar broker network from the same hospital. Officials have stated that such drives will continue in the public interest.
