17 people drown to death in Madan

At least 17 people including two siblings have died when an engine-driven boat sank while visiting Uchitpur Haor in Netrokona's Madan Upazila.

The incident took place at around 11:30 am on Wednesday at Gobindshree Rajalikanda, a haor in front of Uchitpur.

The deceased were identified as Lubna Akhter, 10, and Zulfa Akhter, 7. They are siblings and daughters of Waresh Uddin of Charshita Union. The identities of the rest were not found.

According to local and police sources, 48 people from Mymensingh Sadar Police Station went to Uchitpur on Wednesday morning. Later, the boat sank at Govindashree Rajalikanda in the waves of the haor. Fire service divers have recovered the bodies of 17 people.

Ahmedul Kabir, station master of Madan Fire Service, said that upon receiving the news, the divers of the fire service immediately went to the spot and started the rescue operation. The bodies of 17 people were recovered during the hour-long operation.

Madan police officer in charge (OC) Md Ramizul Haque said that 17 bodies were recovered from the sinking of the boat at Madan Haor. The remaining 31 people have been rescued alive, they are all fine.
