The students of all public universities have been missing their respective campuses for 17 months due to the Covid-19 pandemic which compelled them to stay at home.

“We are eagerly waiting to return to our campus. We are bored and frustrated as the pandemic has left us out of our classes and campuses since March 16 last year,” a university student said.

The government had shut down the country's educational institutions in the wake of the spread of the Covid-19 virus in March last year. Since then, the closure has been extended several times in phases.

However, except the educational institutions, the government has reopened all the government and private offices along with transport services and all other businesses. The government plans to reopen the educational institutions in phases shortly after inoculation of the students to combat the Covid-19.

Professor Farid Uddin Ahmed, Vice Chancellor Shahjalal University of Science and Technology (SUST), said that apart from holding examinations and taking classes, they are also working with all the stakeholders to continue other academic activities.

Replying to a query he said, “Health guidelines must be maintained by both teachers and students once the university will be reopened.”

“Besides, if we get green signal from the government and health experts we will reopen our institution and resume all academic activities,” he added.

The first-year honours-level students who just spent not more than one month on their campuses, expressed their utter dismay. They also said that they would be able to get back to their beautiful campuses enriched with faculty, library, auditorium and dormitories lawn, which consists of a masterfully designed and surrounded by lush green grass.

The tertiary level students also said that the deadly virus has ruined their colourful campus life. They now want to say goodbye these 17-month and welcome the upcoming months with a vow to a fresh start.

“We hope that the horrific circumstances would go forever so that we can start a new morning with new hope. We will overcome all hurdles in coming days,” the students said.

Apart from the SUST, students of all other universities including Dhaka, Jahangirnagar, Chittagong, Rajshahi, Bangladesh Agriculture University, BUET, KUET, RUET, CUET, government medical colleges are also missing their respective campuses.

They now feel bored as they yet to be officially informed when their universities will reopen and all academic activities will resume physically.

On the other hand, most of the public universities are taking classes through online. And many university authorities are holding the final examinations online keeping the residential halls shut.

Meanwhile, students of public universities continued demanding reopening of their educational institutions soon as the Covid-19 pandemic has radically transformed their lifestyle confining them into their residence.

Students must get residential facilities, health protection and transport facilities, the students further said.

However, the university authorities did not pay any heed to such requests of students as they will follow the government’s instruction in this regard.
