17 lakh women to enjoy widow-allowance

Social safety net beneficiaries to be increased, says Nuruzzaman

Social Welfare Minister Nuruzzaman Ahmed has said that a total of 17 lakh widows will enjoy widow-allowance in the current financial year under the social safety net programme. The number of allowances for elderly people will be increased from 40 lakh to 44 lakh and disability allowance to cent percent under purview of the programme, he added.
He also said that the number of the beneficiaries is rising gradually as per Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s directives as the present government is working relentlessly to free the country from poverty and hunger.
He said these while talking to journalists after paying tributes to Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman by placing wreath at his grave at Tungipara in Gopalganj on Saturday.
The minister visited Tungiprara marking the National Mourning Day and 44th martyrdom anniversary of Bangabandhu on Saturday. He also joined a munajat at the grave and prayed for eternal peace of the departed souls of Bangabandhu and his family members.
Director General of Department of Social Services Gazi Mohammad Nurul Kabir, Deputy Commissioner (DC) of Gopalganj Shaihida Sultana and Superintendent of Police Mohammad Saidur Rahman Khan accompanied the minister.
Nuruzzaman said that the present government is working to improve living standard of the poor, helpless and distressed people.
Referring to the month-long programmes taken by the ministry concerned marking the National Mourning Day, he said that the ‘Akheri Munajat’ seeking eternal peace of the departed soul of Bangabandhu will be held on August 31.
Nuruzzaman Ahmed visited elderly people and children at Shanti Nibash and Government Shishu Paribar at Tepakhola in Faridpur on Saturday evening. Later, he spoke at a view exchange meeting.
Addressing the view exchange meeting, the minister said that public welfare oriented works are going on full swing by his ministry under the leadership of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina. No street children will remain in the country, he added. ‘‘We are working relentlessly to ensure the effective social and humanitarian service for those who are socially deprived,’’ he said.
Deputy Commissioner (DC) of Faridpur district Atul Sarker, Police Super Md Alimujjaman, and President of Faridpur district Awami League Subol Chandra Saha were also present at view exchange meeting, among others. Ali Ahsan, Deputy Director of Department of Social Services in Faridpur presided over the function.
